The Power of Mindfulness Meditation for Intuitive Development

Since I was a teenager, I have had a (not-so-secret!) secret that often left me feeling embarrassed and inadequate:

No matter how much I tried, I couldn’t seem to wake up at a “normal” time in the morning, like most people.

Nor could I go to sleep at a “normal” time, no matter how tired I was – my bed time was often around 3-5am and I had no control over it. I struggled with insomnia big time and was lucky that I was self-employed and could get up late a lot of the time.

But prior to self employment, I spent half of my life sleep-deprived, and feeling like there was something wrong with me – after all, the people around me did not believe that I could not control what time I fell asleep.

I remember when I lived with my grandparents, my grandmother would shout through the bedroom door, “The early bird catches the worm!” at 1pm as I was just stirring. The usual sleep hygiene tips and pointers just made no difference for me, and waking up at 1pm often left me feeling disconnected from other people, and depressed that I had missed out on so much of the day.

It took me about 15 years of dealing with this, until I was finally diagnosed with a circadian rhythm disorder, and began to treat it successfully using light therapy & restriction.

Out of this struggle, I stumbled onto something really cool that I never would have stuck with, had it not been for the circadian rhythm issues.

To support the treatment, I started to meditate at night.

I’ve always disliked meditation, and it has not played a major role in my path of intuitive development, as it has for many psychics I know.

But now that I have a clear motivation to stick with a meditation practice, and I am benefiting from it in more ways than one, I feel guided to write an article about it.

Because the fact is, meditation is not just good for relaxation and getting to sleep. It is also brilliant for intuitive development.

But is not the easiest tool in the intuitive development toolbox. And so I am writing his article about three of the meditation pitfalls that held me back for years, and how to get past them, to benefit from this amazing tool for connecting with spiritual guidance.

But first, let’s look at why meditation is so good for intuitive development…

How Meditation Can Benefit You As an Intuitive Developer

When you go about your everyday life, you will be operating in the beta state, which is the brain wave that allows your mind to be alert, think rationally and tackle the goals and tasks that you need to get done.

Most people are in the beta state all day long. The thing is, being in beta makes it difficult to access spiritual guidance, because the only input we have access to in this state is the mind’s input. Being in beta is a bit like having a bunch of different tabs open on your internet browser, related to your daily life.

What meditation does is it trains you to close all of those ‘tabs’ and enter a state of stillness. Done regularly, this will make it much more likely that your sources of spiritual guidance will pop in and visit you, because, simply put, they can finally get a word in edgeways.

And meditation is not just good for your spiritual connection – consistently practised, it can also lower your stress levels, help you to sleep better, lower your blood pressure, keep your brain sharp in old age, increase your immunity and improve your mood.

Here’s How to Meditate:

  • Sit comfortably
  • Close your eyes and breathe normally
  • Focus your attention on your breath – just observe it.

That’s it!

How to Avoid the 3 Pitfalls of Meditating to Connect with Guidance

1. Don’t try to eliminate all thoughts while meditating

One of my Intuitive Awakening students recently complained that he was having trouble meditating because he was having too many thoughts.

Many of us who have tried meditation, and concluded it wasn’t for us, see it as an impossible exercise where we have to get the mind to shut up and be completely still.

This is impossible for most people, and so we give up.

But the point of the exercise is NOT to have no thoughts, but instead to bring your attention back to your breath after noticing a thought that comes up. Sometimes this takes a while – if my mind is particularly active, I can go off on a thought tangent for 1-2 minutes before I have even realized it has happened, and have a chance to bring my focus back to the breath. This is normal and you do not have to beat yourself up about it, and conclude you suck at meditating! (which is what I used to do…)

It is actually completely OK to get distracted by our thoughts while meditating!

2. Set the bar low

I used to get discouraged and would give up on any prior meditation practice I had established if I missed one day (or three). Twice a week is better than nothing, just as five minutes of meditation is better than nothing.

3. Try starting your meditation with a prayer

I like to start my meditation with a prayer that invokes certain spiritual beings that I would like to hear from (this is so that I am more likely to receive spiritual guidance during the meditation session.)

Here is the short and sweet prayer I use – this is adapted from NZ based medium Kelvin Cruickshank’s book ‘Walking In Light’:

“I ask to be clothed in a robe of white light, composed of Divine love, power and the wisdom of the Goddess.

I ask for my guardian angels and celestial helpers to guide me. I ask for my ancestors to watch over me. I ask for the help of family and friends in the spirit world to show me what I need to learn today, and for help in strengthening my spiritual connection.

Kia ora; amen.”

Don’t expect fast results with this – the benefits of regular meditation for your spiritual connection may take a while to manifest. Quite simply, the more you meditate and the more accustomed you are to entering the alpha state, the easier it is for Spirit to pop in and give you guidance on your path.

Another great way to train yourself to enter the alpha state is by using binaural beats – I have written about these here.

Do you use meditation to connect with spiritual guidance?

If not, how about giving it a go?

I’m new to meditation but know I have intuitive ability.

On Jan 17, 2017, I had the worst feeling of dread in my entire life. That night I talked to my girlfriend of almost 3 years and told her something really bad is going to happen. She said “stop worrying, if it’s meant to happen there is nothing you can do about it. Everything happens for a reason.”

On Jan 20 she was in a horrific accident. On Jan 23, at 7:55am I woke to a flash of light. Later that day I learned that was the exact time she passed away. I think she is communicating with me but I’m not sure if what I’m hearing is her or actually my own mind. I am going to work on the meditation and see if that helps me know for sure. Thank you for your guidance in my time of need. Sincerely, Phillip

Are you a fellow Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome sufferer, Anna? I felt quite ashamed for many years about my difficulty in this area but now I don’t mind (well, most of the time). I think I feel more chilled about it now that I’ve discovered melatonin works for me. When we went interstate for a holiday a year ago, with a 6am start, I started getting up progressively earlier with its aid. It took a week but it meant the 6am start wasn’t a total freakout.

Still, that’s not a natural way my body works and left to its own devices I go to sleep at 2am.

Isn’t it funny how people have the idea that to meditate you need to have a mind clear of thoughts? Where really it’s the opposite – to meditate you need to have a mind chockers with thoughts and to just let them be there.

Never tried meditating late at night. Hmmm …

You’ve given me new hope with the 3 pitfalls you’ve highlighted (it’s exactly my challenges). I’m looking forward to start again with meditation.

Wow, talk of synchronicities! I , in the last week or so, have finally begun meditating in earnest! I am in the later years of my life, and the reasons that I just could never get into it were the SAME EXACT reasons that you just listed! I thought I was the odd one out by feeling I just couldn’t do it. I was wrong; I think I am finally getting it, and I don’t have to be “perfect” about it, as I had convinced myself for so many decades. Thanks for the validation!

    Hi Anna,
Great article, thanks!. I started meditating a couple of years ago, amd it progressed organically as I tried different approaches. I always did it in the morning, and am working to establish it again. I’m interested in binaural beats, and have very recently started to try sourcing. I have also used the violet flame when meditating which was nice. I liked the idea of a prayer to start with, and the one you include is especially nice. Thankyou!

Great article! For me, meditation is and has been absolute key to my spiritual development – and better sleep. Meditating at night can be a great experience, since it’s usually the most quiet time and you tend to have your daily ‘guards’ down, making it easier for spirit to reach you.

I usually meditate before bedtime, and after some initial breathing to relax my body and mind I always allow for some minutes of contemplation. I let my guides and angles know what’s on my mind and asking and thanking them for their advice, guidance and protection. After this I try to go into a deeper state of meditation. I have to say that my ability to get into a deeper state of stillness depends greatly on my mood. Being too excited or too tired can be an obstacle.

I agree it’s mostly a misunderstanding that meditation is about eliminating your thoughts. This is simply impossible (at least for now) and will only result in frustration. Being aware of your thoughts, observing them without judgement, while continuously returning your attention to your breath is probably a much better approach. Over time I’ve noticed the gaps between my thoughts last longer, resulting in greater stillness and a much stronger connection to spirit.

    Anna,

Thanks for sharing! The pictures are beautiful of where you are at! I have been meditating consistently for 3 years and I have experienced amazing results on all levels. I never thought of it, but it makes perfect sense about being in beta waves during the day which makes it difficult to access intuitive guidance. If this is the case, what do you suggest? I always wondered how individuals attend to daily tasks but are still able to access that space in which guidance still flows.

  11. Judith Garten

I honor your revealing yourself in this way and grateful that you have inspired me to get back into the state I love being in.

When I am immersed in focusing on my breath I experience in that moment that there is nothing “wrong,” I am totally safe, and life is benign. Opening to my psychic abilities is the icing on the cake.

    Thank you Anna.

    I want your life ? ? ?️

The part where I’m young and beautiful and wise and roam the world on a spiritual quest!

NOT the part where I don’t go to sleep until 3 or 4 or sometimes sun up and I miss appointments because I didn’t wake up in time.

    ?

Wasn’t always like this, was an early riser, but went through a year of excruciating pain while doctors farted around trying to figure out what was wrong with me. Since then, ?. Doesn’t help my husband is a musician and keeps late hours, but I keep later hours than he does. I can sleep 10 hours a night easy.

I am hit or miss with my meditation now, but was a 20 minutes twice a day TM meditator for a few years. I cannot say I noticed a magical difference in myself. But one of my cats, would come sit in my lap whenever I meditated. One day I opened the attic and she crawled up and I couldn’t get her down, so I went in the other room and started meditating, not 5 minutes later she was in my lap ?

I am so sorry for your loss. Of course your friend is with you! You are so not going crazy!

    Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome
Well, have to research that! I’ve found camomile tea and camomile oil sachet near the pillow is helpful too.

    Toodles ?

Mahalo for revisiting meditation Anna. I meditate, somewhat inconsistently, mostly in the morning and occasionally at night. I attended a 10-day Vipassana meditation retreat a few years ago, and it helped lay a groundwork for my practice. It truly does help, and I have come to learn that I can enter into a meditative state throughout the day doing common automatic activities, like sports and running (I don’t recommend while driving, but a book on 5-min meditations say you can do it at stop lights!). I believe (automatic) writing, music, art, craftwork would also apply for others. I have found that simply having fun with honing my meditative skills 15min to 1hr a day is the best way to maintain consistency and connect with my inner guidance. Aloha

This is indeed the Meditation 101 quick-and-dirty hehe! Simple and easy to remember, and the tricky part is just practice practice practice! Anna, have you noticed if starting this practice at certain phases of the moon or anything else timing-wise would better support our efforts toward creating a meditation habit, or does it matter? 😀

Ooh, the cat smooching gig sounds awesome! I need to look into that myself!!

I’ve been meditating for many years, and find it indispensable to my intuitive development. I’ve gotten to the point now where I can meditate instantly by moving my hands around a couple of inches above my head. It sounds odd, but it works great for both focusing and relaxing myself immediately. I think it might be a form of aura adjustment, or something, and it works great for pain relief too.

Great non-intimidating tips for those just starting out – thanks very much for the article! 🙂

Also, check out medium Erin Pavlina’s site with lots of interesting articles on mediumship & the afterlife: http://www.erinpavlina.com/blog/category/the-dead-zone/

Sue – yes, DSPS! Glad you’ve found something that works for you. I wanted to try that but it is banned in New Zealand and my melatonin shipment was confiscated by customs. Perhaps when I go back to the UK this summer..

    Dudu – Good luck!

Moon stars – awesome! I’m glad!

    Vincent – thanks for sharing!

Sarah – In my experience, it is down to practice. The more you enter that state in your meditations, the easier it becomes to slip into it in your daily life without too much effort. Then there are some people who are born with this skill.

Judith – Beautiful! Thanks for commenting!

Lisabeth – Your comment made me smile! Thanks for the kind words!

Lisa Allen – Interesting question – I haven’t seen any differences with phases of the moon. I wonder if anyone reading has.

Jennifer – I think the cat smooching job would be perfect for you! 🙂

  17. Anna Sayce

& thanks to everyone else for commenting!

  18. Sue Stevenson

Anna, not that I’d condone breaking the law but I find when I order melatonin from iHerb that it never gets confiscated … 🙂

    Anna

When I first started psychic development, meditation was a key ingredient, it took me on an amazing journey. During meditation I have had out of body experiences, I have met my spirit guide and my mother who passed away. I am now able to perfectly zoom out the voices of people around me if I need to concentrate on something in work. It wasn’t easy and it took a couple of years before I truly got the hang of it, but for all you budding people trying to get the hang of it, don’t give up, you can achieve so much more not only for psychic development but also in your daily life. I’m a much calmer person for it and it can take you to a World of wonder during a meditation. I also used the binaural beats and I have to say, it’s brilliant, definitely recommended.
